The Equip Series - Day 9 - Restoring the Jewish Context of the Gospel

The Equip Series Day 9 Restoring The Jewish Context Of The Gospel

TERMS TO USE AND TERMS NOT TO USE

Although my desire is to speak to you from my heart, it is also to coach you and make sure you get as much detailed information as possible during The Equip series. So forgive me if you see me slowing down at times to glance at my notes or read Scripture and my eyes are looking away! This is an equipping video and not a motion picture!

The gospel originally was a Jewish message to the Jewish people about the Jewish Messiah. The enemy has twisted this message into something that is foreign to the Jewish people and has even become anti-Jewish!

It is crucial for you to understand this so you will be transformed become into an effective communicator to Jewish people about their own Messiah.
Instead of drawing Jewish people to Yeshua/Jesus most Christians historically have driven Jewish people away from him!

Like I said in a previous video, growing up in a Jewish home, I and many other Jewish people I know thought Jesus Christ was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph and Mary Christ!
I had no idea that Christ was a title; that it was the English translation of the Greek word Christos which in turn is the Greek translation of the Hebrew word Maschiach which translated to English is Messiah!

Messiah is a Jewish friendly word, Christ is not.
If there was such a thing as a time machine and you were transported back to first century Israel and you saw the Messiah and cried out to him,“Jesus!”, he most probably would not answer!
No one ever called him Jesus!

English was not even a language then! His name was and is Yeshua.
The Hebrew term Yeshua means “salvation”.

Wouldn’t you say that was a perfect name for the One who would bring salvation to the world?
When communicating to Jewish people use the Messiah’s real name, Yeshua, instead of Jesus.
And use the English equivalent of the Hebrew word for “Anointed One” - Mashiach, namely Messiah instead of Christ.

Above all, make sure you communicate the difference between all these terms to your Jewish friend.
Help them to understand the language of the gospel has been hijacked.
Remember as you speak to a Jewish person you are restoring Yeshua’s genuine Jewish identity, little by little.

A friend of mine wrote a book about this called Identity theft:
As “The Equip” series continues I will let you know about resources my partners in the Messianic Community have written like “Identity Theft” that will help further equip you!

Every Jew is different.

Many will not even care about the terms you use. Yet it is always helpful to clearly explain the original Jewish terms that have become “traditionally Christian”.

Many Christian terms in the gospel will be misunderstood by your Jewish friend.
Part of effectively reaching Jewish people with the gospel is to always be ready to explain any and every word that can be misunderstood or misinterpreted.

Here are some words to use and some words to avoid. There are not only words that we need to avoid but concepts as well.

For example ones like, Giving your life to Jesus, Making Jesus Christ your Lord and Savior, Becoming Part of the Body of Christ.

I will share with you what concepts to use in their place as The Equip continues but let’s focus now on helpful and unhelpful words.

*Messiah instead of Christ
*Yeshua instead of Jesus
*Born of the spirit instead of converted
*Body of Messiah instead of Church
*Born of the Spirit instead of being saved or becoming a Christian
*Messianic Writings instead of New Testament
*Do not use the term “saint” before the names of the apostles
*Miriam instead of Mary
*Messianic Believer instead of Christian

You will get better and better at communicating as you continue to interact with Jewish people.

Always be ready and prepared to explain the good news of Messiah in a way a Jewish person can understand and see what you are saying through a Jewish lens.
